SOUL PURPOSE

When it comes to songwriting, Sarasota's Soul Purpose keeps it pretty simple. On Needful Things, the quartet's five-track debut EP, the band sings about keeping your mouth shut ("Big Mouth"), needing some loving ("I Need Your Love") and dancing with hot chicks ("Cool Ya Down"). The subjects might be breezy, but the band has a certain musical sophistication, hopping with ease from quasi-grunge and roots-rock to pop-ska and dub. The nine-minute-plus track that closes the disc, "Yahweh," is particularly impressive, a weighty reggae groove that fades into an extended hand-percussion coda. 3 stars
Local Music - November 15, 2007
[LOCAL MUSIC]

Name: Soul Purpose
Members: Pat Monahan, vocals, bass and acoustic guitar; Joe Freed, drums, percussion and vocals; Al Owen, guitar and vocals; Mike Hamad, guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals.
Base of operation: Sarasota
Formed: 2005
Style: Roots, rock and reggae
Bio: The second coming of Sarasota's Soul Purpose compels its "sole purpose," as it were: positive music that transcends conventional genres. Monahan and Freed (both from the now-defunct Havoc) originated the band, and Owen (B-Movie) joined two years ago. The classically trained Hamad enlisted six months ago. Hamad, Owen and Monahan pen new songs, with the entire group collaborating to mine ska/reggae and upbeat roots-of-all-sounds interplay. A five-song EP, "Needful Things," was released in September but did not include Hamad. The quartet now envisions a full-length project that mixes in freestyle hip-hop and what Monahan calls "hillbilly bluegrass."
Quote: "It's a very collaborative project in the sense that there's no one person that is doing all the writing or anything ... I think that's why everybody's so happy." – Monahan

Cd Release Party - August 24, 2007
I have to admit, I rarely go to a CD release party. But this was my own, So I probably should show up right? I can't express the gratitude I have for all of you who made an effort to come out o a rainy night, to see a band most of you have not heard before and then to hear songs most of you have not heard before either. From my perspective I couldn't stop the happiness. We get to express ourselves, and showcase the hard work that has happened over the 3 yrs. That's right 3 yrs to get to that moment. The best part for me was seeing all of you really enjoying yourselves. The drum circle that The boys from ObiShawnKenobi helped out on went so well, we are going to incorporate it in all of our shows. The thrill of the pounding rhythm, and the sense of community that it inspires, it gives it a very primal feel. I relate it to worship. Man giving an offering to God. An offering of art. Like a child drawing a picture for his dad. Here ya go Dad.
